Cohousing in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

The Charlotessville Daily Progress has an article on the first cohousing community in central Virginia, Blue Ridge Cohousing.

"It's like a regular development except people have chosen to live closer to each other and be more interactive in their community," said Lazar, who lives in Shadowlake Village in Blacksburg, a cohousing development. For example, he says, he cooks meals for another family on Mondays and they cook for his on another day of the week. Residents end up driving less because community members interact in a shared space, such as a clubhouse, he says, and porches face each other.

This model ecovillage comprises natural buildings, a school, long- and short-term residences, extensive gardens, greenhouses, and even a bed & breakfast. At Cohousing, the world doesn’t revolve around cars

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

This article laments the trend in housing where the front door has become a vestigial adornment and the garage doors are the main entrance to the home. Then the author discovers Delaware Street Commons Cohousing and finds a place where its not all about cars.

So it was rather startling when a community appeared on Delaware Street - a group of newly built homes with no garages and two porches per home - a front porch facing the street, and one in "back," facing the other back porches facing back at them. And in the middle of it all, a community house with a large kitchen and dining room for periodic shared meals, a living room with a fireplace, an exercise room, a kids playroom, a laundry room, a mailroom where everyone has a mailbox (and a cubby just like in kindergarten).

Ecovillage Conference Tokyo 2007: Rise Of The Ecovillage Movement

This past weekend's second Japan Ecovillage Conference and this month's earlier Chicago Urban Ecovillage gathering demonstrates, the word "ecovillage" has quietly evolved to become an all-purpose, cross-cultural and positive term describing a global phenomenon of diverse people living and working together in communities with the common vision of building a more sustainable future, developing and testing different models of economy, energy and cooperative living (without the sensationalist media attention).
